A TFN is your personal reference number in the tax and superannuation system. Once you have a TFN it is yours for life and it is an important part of your identity.

Why do I need a TFN?

You need a TFN if you want to apply for a Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) loan. You must have a TFN by your course’s first census date.

Repayments for your HELP debt are made through the Australian taxation system using your TFN to identify you.
