Following the passing of legislation on Thursday 28 November 2024, the Australian Government is establishing a new National Student Ombudsman, which will start taking higher education student complaints from 1 February 2025.

The National Student Ombudsman will be an independent and impartial body that will be able to receive escalated complaints from higher education students about the actions of their higher education provider.

From 1 February 2025, if a student isn’t happy with how their provider handles their complaint, they will be able to take their complaint to the NSO.

Until the National Student Ombudsman is established, students should continue to raise escalated complaints to their relevant state or territory ombudsman or independent body nominated by their provider.
